Frequently Asked Questions
The New Hampshire Institute of Art (NHIA) has merged with New England College. The following information addresses questions that have been raised by current and prospective NHIA students.
Why is the New Hampshire Institute of Art merging with New England College?
The merger enables the top-quality programs in art, design, and creative writing to continue, with new and important opportunities for all students. You can expect an expanded student experience that includes not only additional academic offerings but extended extra-curricular and support options.
What can you tell me about New England College?
New England College is a private, non-profit, liberal arts college located on a 220-acre campus in the town of Henniker, NH which is about 30 miles northwest of Manchester. The student body is made up of about 1,100 on-campus undergraduates with a further 1,700 students engaged in online and graduate programs in four divisions: Management, Education, Natural & Social Sciences, and Arts & Humanities. Founded in 1946, New England College is accredited by the New England Commission of Higher Education, the same as NHIA.
Will NHIA’s name change?
Yes. Once the merger is complete later this year, NHIA will most likely become the Institute of Art and Design at New England College. There is precedent for this with other art colleges; for example, The School of the Museum of Fine Arts at Tufts University.
Is there a commitment to maintaining a Manchester campus?
Yes. You can expect that your program will continue to be offered in Manchester.
Will New England College continue to offer BFA programs?
Yes, once the merger is complete later this year, New England College will continue to offer Bachelor of Fine Arts (BFA) degree programs along with Bachelor of Arts (BA) degree programs. NHIA’s existing majors will continue, and most likely, our offerings will expand. New England College, for example, offers a major in game design and new majors such as animation are under discussion.
I see that New England College’s tuition is higher than NHIA’s. Does that mean NHIA’s tuition will increase?
No. For the 2019-20 academic year, NHIA’s tuition and fees will remain as they are today (save for a standard very modest annual increase in line with inflation) and your net cost of attendance is expected to remain essentially unchanged. New England College has a higher tuition rate than NHIA, but it also offers a more generous scholarship program. For subsequent years, current NHIA students can expect that their net cost of attendance will not increase by more than the typical modest annual increases.
Will I be required to take classes on New England College’s Henniker campus?
No. Of course, we want all New England College students to have access to classes offered on either campus. However, we will limit required travel between the two campuses. NHIA students will have the option of enrolling in New England College online courses as well as courses taught by New England College faculty on our Manchester campus.
What are the advantages of the merger for me as a student?
You will have additional opportunities in all areas of your College experience including online classes, additional majors and minors, more student organizations and activities. These include everything from men’s and women’s Division III sports, free skiing at Pat’s Peak, drama, Esports, study away, and many, many others. You will also have a more expansive professional network of alumni available.
